This blog post is especially for young women struggling with the decision of whether or not to serve an LDS mission.
The LDS mutual theme is going to be a strong one with me this year.
If any of you lack wisdom let him ask of God, who giveth to all men liberally and upbraideth not, and it shall be given him (or her). But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering, for he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea, driven with the wind and tossed.
I absolutely LOVE these verses from the New Testament. They have helped me to have the courage and the humility to ask my Heavenly Father when I have doubts, or worries, or need clarification about something. That’s a lot of the time, people. And you know what? He always answers.
This morning I woke up and read a new comment on a blog post I published back in June of 2015. The young woman who wrote it really touched my heart with her willingness to humbly obey the answer God gave her when she prayed about serving a mission and He told her no. That was not the answer she wanted to hear. She had planned on serving a mission. It was important to her. But Heavenly Father said no, and she obeyed Him. It broke her heart. The judgmental comments of others caused her even more pain, but she still obeyed. I consider that a great example of faith and integrity – to do what you know is right even in the face of opposition.
It was interesting to go back and reread what I wrote almost two years ago that would prompt someone to post such a heartfelt comment. I think it needs to be shared again, because we can all ask God and get answers for ourselves, and we need to be willing to trust that others can do this as well as we do, rather than judge them for making a different choice than we think we would have.
I saw this quote recently and almost lost my lunch:
Many young women are serving missions. Many are preparing to serve. Not because they aren’t married or have nothing to do, but because they have a desire to serve and are therefore called to the work. The reason so many are going is because in the next generation, Heavenly Father will be sending His priesthood army to earth and wants to send them to mothers who have been properly trained and taught in the gospel. What better training can a young woman have than a mission? – Guess who said it?
No LDS Church leader with authority to speak for the church has said this, but doesn’t it sure look nice all italicized and printed up on a bookmark?
This false quote is causing harm to many young women….. Continue reading – click here…
