Alma Nurtures Amulek

I wish I could better understand how Alma did this. I know people who have been through some extremely hard things and need nurturing and healing, especially in mind and spirit, but I lack the skills to help them. I just feel awkward and I worry that I will say something that will cause them to hurt even more. How did Alma know how to help his friend who had lost everything and suffered such great pain?

18 Now as I said, Alma having seen all these things, therefore he took Amulek and came over to the land of Zarahemla, and took him to his own house, and did administer unto him in his tribulations, and strengthened him in the Lord.
