I spent yesterday at the Ignite Your Spark Conference in Salt Lake City. It was a great day. For some reason, it always takes me a little while to adjust to a room full of women, especially a room full of women who are unfamiliar to me. The energy they pack creates a sensation that feels like an emotional/spiritual body-slam (maybe that’s why they say the conference is for women and really brave men). There is so much latent force and drive and power there. It’s a really motivating environment.
I met some wonderful women yesterday. Women working to help others be healthy, women working to help their families be strong, women working to help others discover their own strength. Sometimes while in China, I would stand at a corner or a bus station, and look at all the people (so many, many people) and I’d think, “If only these people could see their true potential. If only they could see their strength. They would not only be the largest country by population, but they would be a great strength to one another. They could lift the world.” Unfortunately the Chinese won’t tap into their true potential as long as their freedoms are so limited. But here, in America, at conferences like this one, I see women who are ready to act on their potential. They want to step up and be counted; to make a difference in lives and in the world. It’s an invigorating and empowering sensation.
It’s easy sometimes to live in our own little boxes. We have windows and doors but we don’t open them or walk out to meet each other. Spring is coming! Open your windows! Walk out your door! Meet someone new. SEE people for who they really are. We are each other’s greatest support, strength, and mentors. We can lift each other out of fear, despair, self-loathing, and grief. We can share each other’s triumphs and successes and encourage one another to continue.
There is a sign that was painted on the side of the Berlin Wall after it fell, that says, “Many small people, in many small places, do many small things that can alter the face of the world.”
Find a small thing today, that you can do for someone and Do It.
